HIGHWAY ROBBERIES
MORTON AND WINSTONE CHARGED (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 26. Jack Morton, alias Jack Winstone, alias George Morton, 22, a seaman, and Florence Cooper, alias Florence Winst&ne, appeared before Mr Page S.M., charged in connection with recent highway robberies. Florence was charged with robbing Clifford Thomas O’Regan at Wanganui of £2 10s and at the same time wounding him by shooting him in the leg. Jointly they were charged with being in possession of revolvers; of robbing William Alexander Pine at Day’s Bay on 10th August of £5 18s 6d and also with '.two offences of robbery unde/ arms at Shelly Bay road, Miramar on the night of 7th August. Morton was charged with failing to comply with the terms of a probation order, and unlawfully deserting from the steamer Cambridge, on which lie was a duly attached seaman, and theft of goods and money the property of the New Zealand' Shipping Company and members of the crew. The first witness for the prosecution Maurice 0. Guthrie, gave evidence similar to his previous account ol the method by which McDermott’s car was held up on the night of Ttb August. (Proceeding.)
