TAXI OWNERS
OBJECT TO COMPETITION. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 25. Representatives of the three largest taxi companies in Auckland waited on the Transport Board to-day, and asked the Board to_ assume control of all taxis, fix maximum and minimum fares, and restrict the number of taxis operating. They allege that drivers were, working at all hours, and many werei found asleep in their cabs through l , fatigue. It was concluded that the public should be safeguarded. There nre 370 cab licenses in * Auckland, and the deputation represented 200. The Board set up a committee. On© of the members’ suggestion, that no action he taken, found no supporters. The taxi companies’ request follows tlm renewal of the fare cutting; war, announced ot the end of last, week.
