MAGISTRATE’S STRICTURES
an unsavoury story. A TAXI DRIVER CONVICTED. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 25. The police court was cleared this morning while evidence was lieaid against William George White, 44, a taxi driver, on a charge of being idle, disorderly and habitually consorting with undesirables.
Accused at first pleaded not guilty, hut after evidence, altered his plea to guilty. Three domestics, all unemployed, aged 23, 20, and 21, all on probation gave evidence that accused had many times driven them out to Chinese guldens on the outskirts ot the city. Sometimes they stayed the night. Usually accused called hack for them. One girl said it was usual for girls to pay accused. He was the only taxi driver who had taken them.
Magistrate Hunt:—l have not words to say what I think about him. 1 won’t try to say anything. Unfortunately I can only give him three months. I wish I could give him eighteen months.
Counsel:-—We are not here to uphold the morals.
The Magistrate:—He’s the biggest blackguard I have seen for months. It lie comes again, lie will be charged with being a rogue and vagabond and then 1 can give him eighteen months.
