£IOOO THEFT

AN ARREST MADE. \ WELLINGTON, August 22. Arrested in one of the city skating rinks on Friday evening, Arthur John Roberts, 28, a motor driver, appeared before Mr McNeil, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday on a charge of stealing two suitcases containing jewellery and clothing of a total value of £IOOO, the property of Sladen and Son, wholesale jewellers of Christchurch. He was remanded till the 28th. It is understood that the jewellery was stolen irom one of the firms travellers, who left, the suitcases in a car in Harris Street, while he was absent) for a few minutes. Regarding the jewellery theft case, Roberts had a quantity of valuable jewellery sewn into his clothing when arrested, it was stated, and more jewelery was discovered after a subsequent search.
