CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.
The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday, the new Chairman, Mr W. Armitage, presiding, over Messrs W. A. Banks, S. R, Evison, J. G. Gow, W. P. Spencer, J. J. Hurley, C. S. Thompson, W. Johnson, R, Wild, S. Smith, J. W. Preen and H. J. Bignell. Mr T. B. Strong, Director of Education, was also present. It was decided to state, in reply to the Hokitika Committee’s request, that the board could not see its way to increase the conveyance rates from Blue Spur to Hokitika, The Appointments Committee reported that a circular was received from the Department indicating that registered unemployed male teachers could be employed under the No. 5 Scheme. It was resolved that unemployed exstudents be employed where practicable and that the director be interviewed regarding continuity of their employment. A letter was received from the Hokitika Committee communicating its appreciation of the work recently completed,; at the school, viz., conversion of shelter shed into a temporary classroom ; flooring of second shelter, and provision of a new bell tower. Correspondence was read from the Education Department and the Senior Inspector regarding the Board’s proposals for an extension of rural courses at R.H. Schools. It was decided to approve the Senior Inspector's proposal that Conferences he held between the Inspectors and Agricultural Instructors with the view to obtaining their suggestions and comments in regard to the extent to which manual training and Agriculture could advantageously be included in projected non-academic courses for the secondary pupils at district high schools.
