SAD FATE

FOR UNEMPLOYED CLERK. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. Charles Arthur Booker, aged 44, years, an unemployed law clerk'- ' who had been living in a hut at Stewart’s Gully -on the south bank of the Waimakariri River, was run over and killed last evening by a train that was proceeding to Christchurch from Kaiapoi. The driver stated that half a* mile past Kaiapoi he had seen a dark object on the rails, but he was unable to stop before striking it. Several carriages passed over the body before the train was brought to a standstill.
