TENNIS IN THE NUDE
ADVOCATES OF SUN BATHING. LONDON, June 17. For having playejl tenuis while naked on the Pembroke College Court, Grantchester Meadows, on Sunday morning last two graduates of that college—John Wililam Frame and Mar. tin Henry Eck—were at Cambridge pol- 1 ice court yesterday each fined £3 and 12s 6d costs.
Evidence was given that shortly before ten a.m. ou Sunday they, were •seen playing tennis on the courts in an absolutely naked condition. One witness said that they could easily be seen from the footpath going towards Grantchester village and that there were many , people about, a.t the time. Some women living in the neighbourhood said that they could plainly see defendants from their first floor windows—a distance of about 150 yards. They were extremely annoyed. Eck, from the dock, speaking on behalf of himself and Frame, said that their characters were of the highest. While they were playing tennis it was very hot and thundery, ,so that they discarded their clothes,. The idea that it was contrary to the lair never occurred to them. He was a firm advo. cate of sun bathing, and on every possible occasion he would divest himself of clothes as far as the law allowed in order to derive full benefit from the■sun. They continued playing unsuspectingly until one of the witnesses warned them.
Frame said tlmt he would uot have willingly offended if he could possibly ha ye avoided it. As scon as a complaint was made .they donned their clothes. -a.
Both men are. accomplished mathematicians. Framq was educated at Leeds Grammar School and was a wrangler last year. Eck was educated at Wolverhampton and was junior optime in the mathematical tripos last year.
