FRDAY, AUGUST 14. Tho Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present :—G. A. Perry (Mayor), A. C. 'Armstrong, E. W. Heennn, A. AV. Duff, J. King, G. Heinz, and Dr. Teichelmann. Apologies were made for the absence of Messrs Evans add Ellcock. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. REPORTS. .From Treasurer reporting:—Receipts £lBOl/14/11; payments £770/17/11; debit balance £175/18/- —Record. FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to 'report the following works were carried out during the month of July. ' The for't^s+ 1, in front of the flank of New Zealand was repaired with asphalt and tar sealed, the corner of Hampden and Revell Streets was reconditioned and tar sealed, the junction of Stafford and Fitzkerbert Street at

the Pioneer Memorial was tar sealed; the footpath in Sewell Street between the Clock Tower and the Post Office was reqaired with asphalt and tar sealed, the footpath outside the Saving Bank was repaired with asphalt and tar sealed).

The drain from the cemetery, was piped across the road half way up the hill with nine inch earthenware pipes. The culvert on Racecourse * Hill was taken up and concrete pipes'put rn, a down pipe was put in at corner of Hampden and Hall Streets, and at corner of Weld: and Bealey Streets, Oass Square corner. The drain leading from Cass Square near the pavilion whjch was blocked with pine needles was cleaned out., a block in the drain at the corner of Hall i/a ml Hampden Streets was cleaned out, two traps were put in Hampden Street drain, on© outside the maternity home, and a new pipe put in Livingston Street drain. Guard rails were put un at Miss Ross’s, Fitzherbert Street, a part of the iron fence at the cemetery blew down, this was repaired. The heavy winds during the month blew over a tree which misplaced the concrete pipes in the water main, this we repaired. A tree uprooted at Mr Williams in Stafford Street, pulled up the water service, which was repaired, various leaks and connections required repairing this month which was . carried out. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was nine feet six inches.

The unemployed were engaged in widening Racecourse Hill, the spoil being used in widening the road at tho culvert and lower down, Sale Street drain at the corner of Park Street was cut through and a qhain of concrete pipes lftid down. The gravel pit was stripped of clay and carted away. The logs laying in Sale Street drain were taken out and dumped in an old pit, half way along to the gravel pit. A start was also made widening Fjtzherbert Street between the "cemetery and the north belt. Growth was cut in part of the Botanical Gardens reserve, and various footpaths cleaned. The heavy seas experienced this 'month blocked the mouth of the north belt drain, also the Abattoir drain. These drains will require something more to be done at the outlet to' prevent the blocking up.—Received. From Manager Attatoirs reporting during July there were slaughtered: 24 cows, 27 heifers, 45 bullocks, 386 sheep, 28 lambs, 10 pigs, 13 calves. Condemned 2 bullocks, 2 sheep, 2 pigs. Fees for month £7l 15s 6d (same period last year £64 8s). —Received. ' In connection with drainage in upper Brittan Street it was resolved to defer consideration pending an inspection and report. The Council rose at 8.45 p.m.
