Australians are scorned abroad, according to Mr William C. Allen, managing director of Petroleum of Australia, Ltd., who (says the Sydney Sun) returned from America by the Maluira on August 1. “It makes one’s blood boil to experience the treatment we are accorded. Our money is absolutely scorned. Away from the big cities in the United States they will not accept Australian money. You cannot get five shilling for the pound,” he said. “They are not anxious to do business with you because they are afraid they will not get their money, and there are plenty of sarcastic statements about us. They regard 'Mr Lang as a director and a repudiation'st of the worst type, and consider that Australia is done. When one replies that Australia will pick up again in a few years they laugh. Americans when they learned I was an Australian, often said, ‘Why, you people are all broke.’ .It got that way that .1 was ashamed to show Australian notes. In Papeete and New Zealand it was nearly as bad. People were little short of insulting. Hundreds of people have asked me why we stand for Lang. My experience has been that ft is a. waste of time for Australians to go abroad at present to do business, ft is most difficult to arrange anything.”
