BEFORE SENTENCE
AN UNUSUAL REQUEST. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 14. An unusual request, that before being sentenced lie should be given an opportunity of trying to recover some of the stolen property, was made to Judge Kennedy by William Newton, who appeared for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering. Newton was concerned in a sensational robbery of jewellery from Dawson’s, from which jewellery valued) at £3OOO was stolen. Accused’s mate, Wilson, was • previously sentenced to four years in connection with the same offence. Newton said he would assist the police in endeavouring to recover some of the stolen property. It was a rather difficult task, but he thought he could recover some. The Judge deferred the passing of sentence till August 29th.
