MOTOR TAXATION
DIVISION OF FUNDS.
WELLINGTON. August ll
Reporting upon a meeting of the North Island Motor Union, Mr L. Ashcroft Edwards told the executive of the Wellington Automobile Club that objection had been made to the diversion of the proceeds of motor taxation to the Consolidated Fund. If money were not spent on the roads they would go to pieces very quickly. Anyone driving between Wellington and New Plymouth, or Wellington and Palmerston North, would see that the roads were deteriorating. If the roads deteriorated they would once more’have the cry “the user must pay,” and motorists would be asked to pay for it. The chairman (Mr Bait): I don’t suppose he will he asked to pay. There will be legislation and he will he compelled to pay. Mr Palliser said that the club should take a very decided stand on the diversion of funds which had been raised for a special purpose.
