THE KING AT LORDS

"" INVITATION‘ TO' ’ HIGH COMMISSIONER, LONDON, 'July 2. The High Commissioner (Sir Thomas Wilford) attended the Test' match at Lord’s on Monday. His Majesty tlie King arrived at 12 noon, and ten minutes later he sent the secretary of the MiC.C. (Mr W; Findlay) to invite the High Commissioner to the Royal box. His Majesty made room of Sir Thomas on his right, Viscount Bridgeman (president of the M.0.C.) being on the King’s left. At a break in the play, his Majesty, accompanied by liis secre. tary (Major Hartinge), the High Commissioner, and Lord Bridgeman went out to the field and was introduced to: the members of each team. His Majesty requested; «j3ir Thomas to return with him to the Royal box, where the latter remained until the King left at the luncheon adjournment. The High Commissioner was particularly struck with the very fit appearance of the King. He seemed to be in the best of health, “as fit as a ■fiddle,” said Sir Thomas, and he kept up an interesting and bright conversation. He was particularly interested to hear about the ceremony in connexion with the Etaples memorial to Earl Haig, which the High Commissioner had: attended at the week-end. After the match the High Commissioner went into the pavilion and complimented the New Zealand team on their play. He was sure, he said, that the whole of New Zealand would he delighted with the splendid' display they had given. THE KING AND LOWRY. It is recorded by M. D. Lyon, the Somerset cricketer that the King asked Lowry: “What do you think df our climate?” “Not very much, sir,” replied: Tom Lowry. “Then your opinion is shared by many,” was the King’s quick retort.
