BIGGER QUAKE
IN THE PACIFIC.
(Australian Press Association.)
SYDNEY, August 11
Both the Sydney and Rivervie'w College Observatories recorded ap earthquake that is described as equal in in-, tensity to the great Japanese earthquake" of September 1923. The Riverview Observatory authorities estimate the scene to be nearly seven thousand miles distant. Possibly it is along the Pacific Coast of America. .
The seismograph record began at .03 o’clock this morning, indicating a severe disturbance. A second wave began at eight o’clock and continued at 8.30 o’clock.
' At the Sydney Observatory, the disturbance moved the instrument through the limit of its range.
The tremors were more severe than last Saturday’s and they continuedtill eleven o’clock. (Received this day at 9.25 a.in) • SYDNEY, August 12.
The Sydney Observatory is of opinion that the disturbance occurred over eleven thousand miles from here. Probably near the Azores or Cape le. It is s regarded as possibly a purely submarine disturbance but if near habitation would involve a big loss of life. No foreign cables so far have been received on the subject.
