BERTHING MISHAP
WINGAfttl HOLES A WHARF
WELLINGTON, Aug. 10.
While manoeuvring to pull in alongside 'No. .16 .(Queen’s) wharf on hoi'.ar-. rival from Auckland shortly before 10.30 this morning, the Union St’eam Ship Company’s cargo steamer Wmgatiu, 2378 tons, crashed tows first into ihe wharf, tearing a hole several feet deep into .the timber, and straining some of the piles and stays and the decking. The ship was apparently undamaged and, after going astern, she berthed in the usual manner. The hole in the wharf ’was fenced off and the loading and unloading of the steamer's cargo was proceeded with.
