Although the day was quiet, late in the evening a. serious situation developed and there were scenes reminiscent of n revolution. Tour police are already reported killed by the bullets of Communist demonstrators. At least eight demonstrators were killed, but many are wounded and the number of dead rioters may be considerably more. The district Billow Plate, where are the offices of the Red Flag, and the Communists have their head-quarters, has been cut off. Armoured cars, machine gun s and searchlights are guarding the approach, es. Police are breaking up all Communist meetings. Considerable firing can still be beard' in Alexandra Plate, also the scene of sharp fighting which continues in com- - plete darkness. Communists are firing volley after volley from houses adjacent to Bulow Plate, which the pqlice occupy. The police searchlights are playing (ill suspended houses in order to ascertain wbel'e to attack. Police with drawn revolvers cleared Billow Plate by marching out more than a thousand Communists with their hands raised. Latest reports state fifteen Communists are dead but the casualties are doubtful because most are carried away to secret first aid depots, Communists ferociously assaulted the “Daily Express” correspondent, believing him to be a Fascist.”
