The death took -place late oil Saturday night of Mr Charles Thcodoi'-c Johanson at the Marquis of Lome Hotel, where he had resided for the past thirty years, after a short illness, The deceased was a miner and unmarried and had been resident of the district for a long period of years. A native of Sweden, and 68 years of age, he came to New Zealand 49 years ago, most of which has been spent on tiie Coast. He was a- well known figure in the town and many friends will hear of his death with regret. Yardmen attached to the railway staff at Dunedin were surprised one morning last week when the Christchurch-lnver-cargill goods train steamed in, to find that the 'roof of one of .the big A'B waggons was missing. It was not until inquiries were made into the loss by communiation by telephone and telegraph between Oamaru Palmerston that the roof was found by the line two miles north of Hamden. When the train was passing through North Otago early in the morning the wind was of exceptional severity, and the gust which lifted the heavy roof off the wagon, one of the type used for the carriage of oysters between Bluff and Christchurch, must have been of tremendous force and tornadic in its action, as the eaves are very small. When the roof was lifted off it dropped on to the telephone wires, breaking communication with the north.

Tokers Hall, Arahura, was the scene of a successful ball on Friday night last. It was in aid of St. Paul’s Church, Arahura, and the proceeds will add considerably to the funds. Cood dance music was supplied by E. Cook (piano), J. Ackers (violin), M. Connelly (cymbal, drums etc A. and Findlay (cornet). Messrs Croft (Kaiapoi), and Horniblow supplied extras and Miss M.
