The murder of th Austrian Archduke at-Serejevo on Jun. 28 was followed on July 29 by Austria'; declaration of war on Servia. By August 1 a state of war existed between Ger many and Russia, Senna's ally, and on August 3 Germany declared war on France. Germany’s invasion of Belgium on August 4. was in effect a rejection of Britain’s ultimatum regarding th ■ respect •of Belgian neutrality, and at midnight came Britain’s declaration of war. The outbreak of hostilities was not generally known in New Zealand until 3 p.m. on August 5, three hour; and a half later, when the official annoucement was read by the GovernorGeneral (Lord Liverpool) at 'Wellington.
