The fact that New Zealand consumed over 600,000 gallons of ice cream annually was mentioned by Mr H. Turner, president of the Wholesale Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association, at the fourth annual conference of the association in Wellington last week. Mr Turner added that the principal manufacturers represented at the conference had capital interests in the ice cream industry aggregating about £500,000. Ice cream production absorbed the output of a huge herd of cows and in order to secure milk and cream of the best quality tiie prices paid for supplies were at least 25 per cent, higher than the ruling rnte 8 for butterfat.

A Stewart islander, who recently visited Waituna Hay in search of ambergris, had a remarkable experience with a deer, says an exchange. His dog startled a -stag iir the hush above the beach, and in its fright it came out on. to the? beach and made straight for the sea. After safely negotiating the breakers it got into smoother water and headed out to sea in the direction of Codfish Island, with the dog following. it soon outdistanced the dog, and kept on in the direction of Codfish Island until lost sight of when more than half-way across. The distance to Codfish Island is about three miles, and there is no doubt that the deer would get across safely, as deer are strong swimmers.

A week to-day (Thursday) the annual Hospital Ball takes place in the Soldiers’ Halll. The general arrangements are now well in hand, a strong committee of ladies having been busy for some time past. Quite a large number of fnm-v dresses are being arranged, and there should he good competition for the prizes for the best costumes. The next evening (Friday) there will be a juvenile fancy dress ball, which is assured to be another distinct success.

“It is no wonder, to our shame he it said, the advocated of artificial birth control in England has pointed to the Dominion as a practical example of the effect of birth-prevention practices,’’ states the Roman Catholic journal “The Dfonth.” Figures from the Year Book are quoted in support of this, as follows:—“In 18SG, there were 31.73 children under one year per thousand of our population. Without taking into consideration the infant mortality improvement, the 1926 census showed the figures had fallen to 19.3-5. This represents a decline in children under one year of 39 per cent, in the twentv-one year period.”

The complimentary ball given in the Public Hall Kokatahi last evening by the staff of Kokatahi Dairy Factory Company was a great success from every point of view. The large Hall, which had been tastefully decorated for the occasion was crowded to the doors, a large number of friends attending from all parts of the district. The bnII was given to commemorate the success of the Company during the season 1931, when the following awards were secured N.Z. Champion* ship (tie), South Island Cup, A. J. ATills Cup and South Island Championship. At the Waikato Show they secured one first prize, one second prize and two third prizes and at the National Show four first prizes, one second and one third prize. Reference to these successes were, made by Dir J. Fleming (Chairman of Directors) in the course of a speech during the evening, when he voiced appreciation of the splendid work of Dir J. DTcCallum (Dfanager) and his staff during the past successful year, which showed the largest output yet recorded for a season. For the hall, which proved most enjoyable, capital music was provided hv the Crough Family Orchestra, while several extras were played by the Gaiety Orchestra. The supper arrangements were on a very lavish scale and were done full justice to. The floor was in capital order and the night a beautifully fine one, with a decidedly frosty atmosphere, made dancing a pleasure, and the large crowd kept the floor full until a very late hour, the function being voted the success of the year, and reflecting every credit' on the management.
