N.S.W. FINANCES

SALARIES DELAYED. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, August 5. > With an empty Treasury, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr J. Lang, found it necessary to-day to instruct tlie heads of the Government departments to withold salary payments tomorrow from officers of public service, but the wages men on the industrial services are to be paid as usual. POPULAR CHAMBER. DISAGREES WITH THE AMENDMENT. SYDNEY, August 5. In tlie New South Wales Assembly, Premier Lang moved that the House disagree with the Legislative Council’s amendment to the Public Service Salarie s Reduction Bill as cabled. The motion was carried on a party division by 47 votes to 34. Mr Lang'said that 1 it was quite evident that tlie Legislative Council was assuming unto itself the right to govern this country. The Government j had purposely drafted its taxation | bills .so that the burdens would fall on the shoudlers of those host able to bear them. Indeed the Government ivas definitely pledged not to attack Avagcs or the lower-paid, people in the community, but the Legislative Council bad entirely defeated this object—- | first, by tliOAving out the , Emergency Taxation Bill, and now by so mutilating the Public Service Salaries Bill that if tlie Government accepted the amendment, it, would be tantamount to admitting that the standard of living in Noav South Wales was too high. Mr Bavin, (Lender of the Opposi tion), said that the Premier’s criticism of the Upper House was unworthy. He continued: “T hold in my hand a circular issued to-day by the Treasury ordering the Avitliolding of public servant’s salaries for the time being. This emphasises the scrums- j ness of tlie Government’s position, j which is entirely due to the senseless I actions of the Premier. He is pursu- j irrg a bombastic course arising from the egotism \ and stubbornness Avhich brought the country to its present condition of degradation. My suggestion is that, if he cannot govern he had better make Avay for a Government than can.” OVERDRAFT RATE REDUCTION. SYDNEY, August 5. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, Limited, announces a reduction* of its interest charges on overdrafts of one per cent, as from August Ist.
