HOCKEY

The hockey match on Cass Square yesterday afternoon played for the Brook . - Cup between 'Hokitika Ladies’ Club (holders) and Cronadun Ladies’ Club /challengers) provided an excellent game. The afternoon was a glorious one, and • the ground i-ry but somewhat too rough for good hockey. The game opened with Hpkitika attacking, and they had several good chances of scoring in the first quarter of an hour. Then Oronadun went away w’ith a nice run to the other end .and after a brief rally scored a neat goal. jThe play came back to the other efid, Hokitika attacking fiercely, and though there were many close shots Cronadun kept their goal intact till half time. second half provided a somewhat more even game, though Hokitika managed to score two goals. The play was up'and down the field, both Cronadun • and Hokitika missing, good chances to score'..: Then from a fast run Hokitika scored a goal. A series of attacks followed but Cronadun then attacked and a fine chance to score, but the ball went outside the net. Back went the play and from a rally in the circle the winning goal was scored with a fine hit. The remaining five minutes of play was even but attacking well, but though tiring, Hokitika hung on to their advantage and were returned winners by two. goals to one. The goal winners were Miss H. BidDud and Miss M. Hughes for Hokitika, and Miss K. O’Donnell for Cronadun. Mr F. Archer of Cronadun made a capital referee.
