U.S.A. NOTE TO CANADA
WASHINGTON, August 1. The State Department, in a note replying to Canada's formal protest against the shelling and capture of Josephine K, assorted that the Coastguard vessel acted within treaty rights.
Another more detailed note will probably .be sent after the New York Federal Court acts on the suit for damages for libel filed against the Josephine Iv by the United States.
On .January 25 a United .States revenue cutter shelled the Josephine K. registered in Nova Scotia, killing the captain. Blank shots were fired fit's! as a warning, hut it was said that the alleged rum-runner refused to stop. An official inquiry exonerated the revenue men in the matters of the captain’s death. A member of the crew of the Josephine K alleged that the revenue men were drunk.
