FORTUNE TELLING
AT TEA ROOMS.

WANGANUI, August 3
A cise of considerable interest to ton-mows was heard this morning before Magistrate Salmon, when Annie Camille Reid was charged that she cl id undertake to tell fortunes. The information w'as under Section 236 of the .Justices of the Peace Act. Defendant had been engaged at the Ritz, Auckland and Wellington, Indore coming to the D EC., Wanganui, to read cups in tea-rooms. The evidence showed that Constable Kleiiiiiig' aird IV>IiW”M. f fo7»»‘ n AVmffWiity visited the rooms, and requested to have their cups read. They were told to tak a’cup. turn it upside down, and turn round three times and they wore then told various events Unit would happen to them. The Matron was going to he very prosperous and she would live till she was over 80. The constable could also look ho ward to good prospects, and he would he going a long way from New Zealand.
Mr Treadwell .sidimillted that the whole tiling was trivial, and was being carried on at tear rooms all over the Dominion, and in private houses. It was harmless and amusing, and it created a certain amount of hilarity. The defendant in this instance did not undertake to tell lortunos.
The Magistrate hold that if was clear under the circumstances under which the ddfendnat was engaged that she was undertaking to- toll fortunes, and this was forbidden by statute and it must he stopped. The accused was convicted and was ordered to pay costs. Counsel asked that no conviction be entered, as the defendant was a nurse, and it might be detrimental to her profession. The Magistrate intimated that, under the circumstances he would not renter a conviction.
