AN APPOINTMENT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, Augusts. With medical experience- in three countries, Dr 11. K. Corkliill will lie appointed' Wellington Port Medical Otlicer in sticcessioji to the late Dr McLean. Since Dr. McLean's death, Dr. Robert Stout lias been acting as Port Health Officer. Dr C’orkliill is the soil oil* Mr T. E. Corkbill, who prior to Ins retirement, was assistant general manager of the Rank of New Zealand, and brother to Dr. T. F. Corkbill. GIRL’S THEFT. WELLINGTON, August 1. A girl of eighteen, who row inly alleged to the police that she was attacked by burglars and was pushed into a room on returning to the place she lived, after work, admitted in the Court to-day, that her story was a fabrication. She was up on it charge ol theft. The Magistrate expressed his concern that such a girl should be at a loose end. Her mother was in the hospital, and her father was in Napier. It having horn stated that the girl’s brother would give her a home, the Magistrate convicted her, and ordered her to conic up tor sentence if called. The girl is to keep away from dances, and to stay with her brother until she obtained employment. tSlie was also ordered to refund fifteen shilling she had stolen. MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED. WELLINGTON, August 2. A motor cyclist, named Tony Kjar, aged If), of „Hall Street, Masterton, was admitted to the hospital to-night, suffering serious injuries which lie received when he struck hjs head on a brick wall near Rnver Hutt while trying Lo avoid a motor car. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. DUNEDIN, August 3. Prisoners sentenced were David William Forsyth 21. assaulting a taxi driver by striking him on the bead with a tomahawk, four years reformative. William Albert Harlingtoii, 28. married. attempted rape, two and a-hall years gaol. HEAVY FINES. DUNEDIN. August 3. William George Lindsay was fined £2O and Robert Leslie Howies £3O for laying bets on tote odds. The magistrate said that lie had remanded both men in custody from Friday last as lie was not satisfied with the position concerning betting in hotels and had asked lor a police report. It was unfortunate that licensees wore allowing betting on their premises.
