ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES
REDUCTION IN NUMBER RECOMMENDED. WELLINGTON, -July 29. As a move towards greater efficiency tlie Department of Internal Affairs recommends a reduction in the number of Acclimatisation Societies throughout the Dominion. With fill] appreciation of the good work done 'by tlie thirty districts ol New Zealand in the past, the Minister in his annual report, presented to Parliament to-day, says it is the considered opinion of the Department that with fewer districts the costs ol administration could be mJaterially reduced. “Effective ranging is essential,” th" report states. “There cannot be too much ranging and even if only th 1 savings from administration expenses wort 1 devoted to this purpose the results would he an increase in absolutely protected lords and native and import 'd game and fish through the greater protection afforded against poachers. The tendency of recent years - has ' been in the direction of amalgamation, the Opotiki district having been linked up with i oun' fa and Coromandel with Auckland.
