ELECTORAL ROLLS

LARGE INCREASE IN NUMBERS. WELLINGTON, July 29. Public interest in the coming general election is apparent from the lovwad state of the general electoral rolls, which closed on July 8 last. The to al pumbers of electors on the roll at that date was, 814,286,. compared with 1755,922 oh the main roll in 1928, or 644,633 on the combined main and supplementary rolls. Present indications are that the addition of new electors who ' have qualified for the suffrage in the last three, years, together with new arrivals in the Dominion and others, wifi bring the total on polling day to upwards of 990,000, The work of purging the rolls and adding new names ' has been proceeding steadily since last general election, arid up to June 30 112,289 new enrolments had been made bv various 'returning officers, and 154,373 -names had been removed ' by reason of death, transfer, departure from the ’Dominion and other causes. iTn addition, 57,029 changes of address ■had been .notified. In several electorates the combined totals on the general ami supplementary rolls-in 1928 already have been exceeded. The most notable instance is Hutt, where, 16,614 names are on the main roll just closed, as against ,14,898 on the two rolls in 1928. In (Hauraki the present figure is 11.611. as against 10,532 in 1928; Invercargill 13,430,. as against 12,380; Waipawa 9157, as against 8794. In. these instances the rolls ' have, of course, been brought pretty well up to date as a result of recent bv- r lections. Other cases are ; Clutha 9843, as against 9134; 'Mannkau, •A* I ‘'g against IVBS/Y- Mid-Canterbury 10,217, against 10,170; Otaki 9056, ag.dust 8785 ; Waitaki 9044, against 8993: .Wellington East 14-860, against 14,541: Wellington Suburbs 15,585, against 14,751.
