THE BUDGET

INCREASED DUTIES. CUSTOMS CHANGES. WELLINGTON, July 30. Th 0 following alterations which become effective to-day, subject to Section 143 of tlie Customs Act, 1613, were submitted in the Customs Tariff resolutions in Pinliument this evening. INCREASES. Increases were made on the following: Cut and Plug Pipe Tobacco.'—Sixteen pence per pound. Tea. —Threepence per pound. Sugar.—One half-penny per pound. Imported Beer.—One shilling pei gallon. Five per cent ad valorem duty is added to the pre.erential-and geneial rates on the following:— Confectionery.' Apparel. Hosiery. Carpets. Fancy Goods. Jewellery. Plate. Tobacco Pipes. Linoleums, gramophone records, and cameras, which formerly were free under the Bfitish tariff, and twenty-five per cent, under the foreign tariff, are now as follows: —Twenty per cent. British; forty-five per cent, foreign. Ten per cent, is added to tlie Preferential and General Tariff rates on raw, dressed, and made-up furs; also on silk piece goods,. The toilet preparations duties are , increased to thirty-five per cent, for British, and fifty-five per cent. for foreign. The foregoing are all subject to the existing surtax of nine-fortieth.se of the duty, except that on sugar, which, is reduced to one-twentieth. PRIMAGE DUTY. A three per cent, primage duty is imposed on all goods that otherwise are free of duty, except on manures, films, bran, pollard, and goods formerly exempted. EXCISE DUTIES. The excise duties on cut and plug tobacco are increased by sixteen pence per pound. The beer duty is increased by sixpence per gallon. The foregoing increases cease at the end of next year. The flour duty is reduced by fortyeight shillings per ton after the end of next February. The wheat duty is reduced by thirteen pence per bushel after the end of' February next.
