DEFICIENT TRUST ACCOUNT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 29. Arising out of the prosecution of H. J. M. Thomson, solicitor, of Inglewood, who recently was sentenced for the theft of £BOOO in trust money, Lawrence M. M. Monteath, accountant, of New Plymouth was to-day charged with making a false declaration in relation to a solicitor’s trust account, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed. The evidence was that Monteath made the usual, declaration that he had personally audited Thomson’s trust account, in which, it was subsequently proved, there were large deficiencies. The police allegation was that Monteath had not made a. personal audit. Monteath’s solicitor, in asking for the dismissal of the charge, explained that Monteath had relied on an examination of the books by T. 0. H. Nioholls, a registered accountant, and had made a declaration be lore a J.P. Counsel quoted authorities t-o show that ‘“personal exam illation’’ had a wider meaning. The Magistrate decided that there was a case to answer.
