Yesterday afternoon when coming home from the Grey Main School, a boy named Max McGlashan, son -of Mi Len McGln.shan. while crossing TninuiStreet, was knocked down by a passing motor car, and sustained lacerations on the scalp and leg, and abrasions on the face and side. He was picked up by the driver of the cai, Mr Sparks, of Ten Mile, and taken to the surgery of Dr J. W. Mcßrearty in Cowper Street, where the head wound was stitched and the leg wound dressed, after which he was taken home.

Research work for the promotion of the whitebait industry . has been undertaken by the Government, according to Hon. : Mr Donald, who, replying to Mr Field in the House yesterday, said that the question of revised and more lestricted regulations for governing the whiteba.it fishing including the licensing of the whitebait fishers, was one which had raised considerable controversy. It was felt that the only safe basis for administrative action with a view to the conservation that fishery was thoroughly an investigation into the fishing and the establishment of the life-history of the fish. A great deal of work had been done in this direction, hut there was still more to do before the problem could he dealt with in a comprehensive way,

Members of the Mothers’ "Union, from branches in all parts of the West Coast, attended a festival held at Greymouth yesterday, and visitors from Christchurch were also present. The proceedings commendced with morning tea at Trinity Vicarage, followed, by corporate Communion and sermon at Holy Trinity Church, by Archdeacon Jermyn. Dinner was partaken of at Herb Moore’s rooms. An address was given in the afternoon by Mrs R. J. Hervey, of Christchurch, follewed by afternoon tea in Trinity Hall. Tim annual ball of the Excelsior Football Club took place in tb Su.diers’ Mali last evening and was very successful, there being a good attendance. Music was supplied by the Melody Orchestra and the floor was in first class order. The ladies committee served an excellent supper.

An attempt was made to break into the boot shop of Mr H. A. Wynn, ol 132, Opawa Road, Christchurch, on Monday evening, but owing to the efficient manner in which a powerfu burglar alarm operated, the thief was put to flight. The burglar inserted a jemmy in the door of the shop and when he applied pressure the alarm' went off waking the neighbourhood. People nearby saw a man d'sapp'’ar : rg at a fast speed and detectives are inquiring 'after the owner of an electric torch which was left behind.-
