Miss May Beatty, who suffered a minor injury to one of her feet about eighteen months, ago, has lately been to hospital for an operation and when the last mail left Los Angeles she was making a good recovery. It has been remarked more than once by visitors that Nelson is feeling the existing depression 1e.93 than any other place in the Dominion (states the Mail). FWther evidence of this fact was given to a local business man the other day by 'the representative of an English firm with headquarters in Aus. tyalia, who goes through the Dominion twice yearly. He has just-com-pleted a visit to the North Island. Asked what his opinion of New Zealand was ho replied that by comparison with Australia it was a paradise, and that so far as he could judge the depression existed to a very large ex-, tent only in the minds of the people. The firm’s New Zealand business had kept up wonderfully, a”d he regarded Nelson as being the best town in the Dominion from a business standpoint with Invercargill a close second.

The death of Mr Peter Kirwan genr. of Sewell Street took place last evening after an illness lasting a few weeks. The deceased was a native of Clogher Head, County Lough, Ireland and was 82 years of age. Deceased came to Hokitika about 60 years ago, and for many years was in the employ of his brother the late Lawrence Kirwan, who carried on a large fruiterer and produce business in Re veil Street, on the site of Mr S. J. Preston’s shop. Later lie was in the employ of Messrs Mandl and Co. for about 2o years. The deceased was of n quiet disposition and was generally esteemed, proving a good citizen during his lengthy residence in the town, The deceased leaves a widow, one daughter (Mrs Wm. Delaney of Kaimatn) and three sons (Peter, Lawrence and Patrick, all well known residents of the town). General sympathy will be extended to the relatives in their loss.

The well-known galloper, Bank Draft, was recently loan'd dead in ore of Mr John Adamson’s paddocks, at Harihari, where he had been turned out for the winter. The horse was owned by Mr \Y. McChiggsge.
