■ A method of handling coal which is new to Lyttelton was put into operation on Monday, when the l Canterbury Steamship Company’s steamer, Storm, was unloaded by the four new electric grab crams on the Gladstone PUr. the cranes have been erected for several months, but were only put into use last week. They are especially suitable for handling bulk cargoes of coal, phosphates or sulphur, but the grabs may be taken off and the cranes used for general cargo. The Storm arrived at Lyttelton on Sunday with a cargo of bunker coal for the company’s own hulk,' Raupo. Work commenced at 6 o’clock with two cranes operating on each of the steamer s two holds. The hulk was moored alongside the Storm and the cranes grab the coal from the steamer, and, luffing but over the steamer, drop the coal into the hulk.
