TUNNEL TRAGEDY
Five Men Kilt.ed, United Press Association.—By Electrio Tblegraph—Copyright). LONDON, July-23. Five men were "killed in mi underriver tunnel at the Ford Works at Dogenham.in Essex. ' They were overcome by gas, and were pitched into the water at the bottom of the cyclinder. FATAL GAS DUE TO REFUSE. LONDON, July 20. The deaths in the Thames tunnel disaster include the foreman, Mr William O’Donnell, aged 26 years, who first detected the gas, and shouted a warning to the others. The night shift had apparently disturbed an old refuse heap, producing carbonic oxide gas, which had not been expected, as other shafts had been safely sunk. Firemen, wearing gas masks, brought the bodies to the surface. The dead included two brothers.
