The weather was fine, but the wicket was affected by the previous night’s rain. Lowry won the toss, and he sent the County in to bat. From the New Zealand team there were omitted KJerr, Matheson and Dempster. The Hampshire teanPis as follows: ■Baring, Arnold, Bailey } Brown, Mead, 'Harfield, Pothecary, Kennedy, Creese, Boycs and Synn. The County batsmen made a poor showing before the New Zealanders’ accurate spin bowling. Arnold was outplayed by Cromb when the total was one. Bailey was brilliantly caught by Blunt at short fine leg when attempting to turn Vivian. Another brilliant divirtig catch by Ta.lbot at silly point dismissed ’Harfield. •Neither Brown nor Mead was comfortable, and they Were caught Out off half-hearted forward shots. After lulich, Kennedy edged Allcott to the slips and was caught. > •Rain Set-;in shortly afterwards, am! caused the abandonment of . play for the day. The New, Zealand bowlers made good use of the wicket, particularly Vivian and Merritt. Both spun "the ball well, and* had all the batsmen in difficulties. The. attendance was six thousand.
