A sl.ght shock followed at one fortyfive. ■ The Government Seismologist places the origin -of the quake about 69 miles distant from Vvell.ngton, apparently ill the Nelson region. .. The intensity of the main quake was four on the Uossi-Forel scale. IN CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 25. At 1.3'4 a.m. there was a sharp,shock of earthquake which awakened many people and caused some alarm. The earthquake had its origin probably about seventy miles away from •Christchurch, according to a report from the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. The tremors extended over a period of just over eight minutes, but the shock remained at its height for only a few seconds. The actual commencemerit of the tremors was at lhr. 31 min. 20sec. after midnight and their direction ■was probably west to east. Reports from Arthur’s Pass state that .the shock was not severe there and no damage was done. Cheviot re* ported that the disturbance did not alarm residents as, though sharp, it was not of great severity. The shock was felt severely m Lyttelton, but no damage , was done. The tremors weye felt for from seven to tm seconds and windows rattl d alarmingly, awakening many sleepers.
