There was a very hopeful tone about the possibilities of gold-mining developments in North Westland at the Power Board meeting on Friday. Several ventures are on the tapis at present, and one in particular in the Callaghans district, is thought of very highly. In the past there have been difficulties about working the . ground to advantage, hut with the possibilities of power supply the venture is far more promising, and as a result a company has been formed to take up the venture. This, it is believed, will be the forerunner of other like undertakings in the northern locality once the economic working of the ground is demonstrated. To facilitate the extension of the mining industry to the Callaghans district, and its active revival also in other neighbouring localities former water races in the vicinity require to be put in order, Probably less than £IOOO will suffice for the wo fit, which if put in hfind would employ much labour, and the fruits of the work would be the reestablishment of the industry in a gold bearing district. Monty spent in this direction would be a practical method to assist it in meeting unemployment. Avenues of this character, 'offering permanent industrial employment in the long run, would be the most, advantageous way of meeting the position in that sustained work would be available without continuing to lean on unemployment funds. The unemployment scheme has been long enough In operation now to reveal its weaknesses, the main feature of which is the futulity of much of the work performed. There is no promise of reproduction from much of the temporary work carried out, which is often a stop gap only. When money is available and it can be used in real development work giving the promise of sustained occupation later, without recourse of the unemployment fund, the bes u purpose is served. Such an outlet is open in the North Westland mining district, and if each proposition is considered on its merits and possibilities the way should be opened for real advance in. assisting to cope more adequately with the' unemployment difficulty. „ . ■ • ■
