MILLIONS OF CANS
NEW BRITISH INDUSTRY. Another great, step in the progress of Britain’s new industries was made on May 28, when the world’s most up-to-date can-making factory was opened at Pern' Wood, Worcester, by Lord Cobliam the lord-lieutenant of the county. The new factory will make 1200 cans a minute, or 100,000,000 a year. Thousands of tons of best Welsh tinplate will be used,, bringing employment to many districts in Wales, i Hundreds of new hands have been employed here, and so optimistic is Mr G. H. Williamson of the success of this venture, of which he is the pioneer that he has built this vast factory in such a way that it can be extended and its output trebled with little trouble. Already it covers ten acres of ground. Throughout the whole process of the factory no can is touched by hand from the moment it enters the giant oven for lacquering till it emerges a complete can from an overhead conveyor that discharges it direct into a railway truck on the siding.
