NEVER SEEN A SOVEREIGN. After stealing a sovereign from a woman’s bag a hoy of nine went with another lad to a c.off&e stall in North Woolwich and asked for a halfpenny worth of sweets. They thought the sovereign was a half-penny. The proprietress said: “I think it is a soyere J gn I'll give you a, shilling for it,” and the hoys took the money. When charged; with receiving the sovereign knowing it to he stolen,'she said the hoys said they had found the coin in North Woolwich Gardens. She did not know it was a sovereign. Sin had never seen one before. The Magistrates said they though it strange that a woman of 30 had never seen a sovereign but they discharged: her.
