WELLINGTON, July 22
Mainly through the efforts of the'r swift back division, who were displaying great combination, the Welling.on Rugby 7 representatives defeat.d Southland to-day by 7 36 points to 13 in the first match this season for the Ranfurly Shield. The first half of the game was rather ragged, but after the spell Wellington got going, quickly scoring 28 points to their opponents’ 13, after having an eight point advantage at half-time. Southland’s main strength lay in their forwards, but the Wellington pack more than held its own, while the backs played brilliantly 7, Lilburne being the originator of many dashing movements. SYDNEY TEAM’S VISIT. AUCKLAND, July 21. The Eastern Suburbs Rugby League team of Sydney, which is leading in the competition, having been only beaten for the first time last Saturday by St. George, has, acecpted terms for a visit to New Zealand this season. Leaving Sydney oil October 2, the team arrives at Auckland four days later. Matches have been- arranged against Northland combined clubs at AVhangarei, October 8; against an Auckland club team, October 10; against South Auckland and Waikato, October 14; and against a club team at Auckland, oil October 17.
