What a referee described as the. dirtiest incident he had ever seen on the football field ended to-night in. J. Cairns, a Mayfiedl senior Rugby player being stood down for the remainder of the season by the Ashburton Rugby .Union., ■ . ; ■

v Mr 0. W. Brown, referee 'in the senior match, Mayfield. V.. AUenton, last Saturday reported that he had occasion to order .Caims off the field for deliberate foul play. The referee and the offending player attended til# meeting. Mr Brown said that Cairns landed oh top of ou© of the Allenton players and the attention of Mr Brown was drawn by. bad language. Caims had his hands on th© opponent’s throat and was bashing his on th© ground. It was the dirtiest incident he had ever seen on the football field. There was no incentive.

Caims stated that he was fending off his opponent and fell on top of him with his hand on his chin. He admitted using the language complained ,of by the referee 'but denied that he had acted in the manner stated. It was decided to stand Cairns down for the rest of the season.
