CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday last present:—Messrs W. A. Banks (chairman), S. ,R. ■' Evison, J. G .Gow, W. P; Spencer, G. W. Armitage, J. J. Hurley, C. S. Thomson/W. Johnson I>; Wild, H J. Bignell, .J. W. Preen and S. Smith.

A letter was received from the school Committee’s Association protesting against the board’s practice of purchasing imported timber and urging that New Zealand timber be used in its place. It was resolved to reply that the board’s instructions to its officers are that New Zealand timber must. be made use of wherever possible and members have been assured that the board’s directions have been compiled with. MEDICAL WORK IN SCHOOLS’ The School's Medical Officer, Dr Baker M’Laglen, reported that work done during the month was as follows Schools inspected, 4; children completely examined, 1008; ohildren partially examined, 391; notifications sent to parents'6o9; children whose parents were interviewed personally, 286; prospective probationer teachers examined 54. / iWotlt done by. school nurses wns as follows- Home visits paid, 139; children examined for medical inspection, 1701 j re-examined after medical inspection, 330; taken to hospital ns out patients, 1; taken to dental outpatients department, 82; examined for infectious disease, 148; health address® to; school ohildren. 15. The report was adopted. Appointments confirmed included: Grevmouth, Mr J. Graham, head teacher. Leave of absence was granted Mr A. H. Seebeek (Kumnrn) a month, owing to illness;' and Mr ,T. Chalmers (Ross) a month, owing to illness. The attendance, officers ronort for •West "Coast (Mr W. D. Mackay) was received.

FOREMAN'S REPORTS.

Taylorville teacher’s residence.—The erection of this residence was completed during the month and handed over to the Master, who expressed his satisfaction with the residence. He ha,s been occupying the residence since the 22nd. June.

Blackball new school.—The gravelling required for paths and around the school building is now finished. Later, when this has consolidated, the asphalt can. be laid down; this As provided for in the grant. Blaketown gymnasium.—The painting of-this building, authorised, some time ago/was put in hand and finished. Cameron’s school.—During the month the repairs to windows, doors and' bell-tower were put in hand and finished. The interior sndi exterior of thi4'‘ v rtehodl l! and outbuildings" 'should pow he painted, Part-a school.—During the mouth I orjsed work at this residence was put in haiud during the month and completed. The., drain from the washhouse, bathtoom, and scullery has recently been causing a great amount of trouble, and 011 examining same I found it to be a wooden box drain which had decayed. I have replaced this with a 4in. pipe drain with necessary traps, etc. Paroa school.—During the mouth I had the cross ventilating sashes installed An the Master's room to give cross ventilation. I also had repairs carried out to the roof of the school, ■belter shed and fences. This work is now finished. The painters are now painting tile school and out-offices. Hokitika, temporary class room.--During the month a commencement was made to convert part of the shelter shed into a temporary class room; this will be finished in a few days, when I intend 1 to proceed with the .flooring of both the boys and girls shelter sheds, I also bad the bell d mantled from the tower above the .school and have let the contract to the Despatch Foundry to supply a steel tower 25ft. high. Runanga teacher’s residence.—The renovations and additions to this residence is now in hand and will be finished in 'a’ few days. When this is finished I will proceed with the ceilings at the school. Grey main school. —During the month I have had some necessary repairs carried out to the windows, doors and roof at this school. I also had a number of fire extinguishers placed on the, walls at the various entrances to the school.

Cobden school.-The necessary repairs to the windows,’ doors, extra shelving in cupboards a,nd repairs to fences, is now in hand.
