ROBERT SLATER. , (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 15. Obituary.—Robert Slater, aged SI, first representative of the workers in the Arbitration Court. [Slater, Robert, J.P., B. Cumberland 1850, s. of llobt. Slater, mgr, coop. society; m., 1812, Maria, d. of Win Turner, Cleator Moor; four s., four d. Ed. parish schs., Frizington and Cleator ; at 12 served 18 months with stone mason; on a farm 4 yrs., then mining for 18 months ; grain warehouse 2 yrs.; commenced business as carrier 1812;. arr. N.Z. 1879; worked on Otago Can-, tral Railway, organising his Ist union (rly, construction hands) 1880; engage ed in clothing factory Dun. 18834901 j appointed 1895 to represent workers, op Arbitration Court, and sat for many yrs.; mem, organising com, Tailcresses’ Union, Dun,, 1889; mem--Ist exec.; mem. of com. to draft rules for formation of Trades and Labour Cl. 1889; Ist pres, of Cl.
