A FAMOUS AIRMAN
Air Vice-Marshal Sir Philip Woolcott Game, G.8.E., K.C.8., D. 5.0., as Governor of New South Wales, has con, sistently refused to consent to the request of the Premier of the State, Mr J. T. Lang, to make further appointments to the Legislative Council in order that the Labour Government’s policy may be carried out. Mr Lang referred the matter to the Dominion Office in London, and it was said that he had asked for the recall of the Governor.
Sir Philip Game, who comes from an old Worcestershire family, was born in 1876, and after his education at Charterhouse, joined the Royal Artillery, in 1895. He early saw service, taking part in the South African War, where he obtained the rank of captain and was mentioned in despatches. After a period with his regiment in England he was appointed to a staff position at the War Office, which he held until the beginning of the..war in 1914. In the meantime lie had been promoted- to major, and in 1911 won the Gold Medal of the' United Services Institute. As a result of his services during the war, from 1914 to 1918, he was created C. 8., awarded the D. 5.0., and a number of foreign decorations. ‘AT, the conclusion of hostilities, as he had then been closely identified with the organisation of the Air Force, he was appointed to the Air Ministry as Director of Training and Organisation, where he continued 1 until 1922, when he was appointed to command the R.A.F. in India. A year later he was back at the Air Ministry in London as member of the Air Council for Personnel, in which capacity he was responsible for all appointments in the R.A.F. and the provision of men for the various units.
Sir Philip Game is a married man, wdth three children. He i,s a. nephew of Sir Henry Wigram, of Christchurch. Lady Game was formerly Miss Gwendoline Hughes-Gibb, of Blandford, Dorsetshire. There are two sons and one daughter.
