ALLEY BEATS LURICH
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 13. The Town Hall was packed tonight on the occasion of the professional heavyweight wrestling bout between Tom Alley, the Morman Matman and Tom Lurich, “the Russian Lion.’’ The contest finished sensationally in the seventh, round, when Lurich, who was leading by a fall, 5 was back-loop slammed and was then unable to continue, just as it seemed that Alley must submit to the Russian's punishing figure four body scissors. Alley weighed in at 14 stone, but Lurjch refused to -go on the scales. He was by far the bigger man of the two and was announced as weighing 15 stone 9 pounds.. Before the main bout, Bures, “The Gorilla Man,” who stepped off the. boat from America to-day,-was introduced, and it was announced that he would grapple with Harry Demetral “The Greek Leopard” at the Town Hall, next week. Bures is a, pupil of the famous Joe Stetcher, twice worlds champion, and is renowned as the man with the '2l-inch neck and the longest arms in the world. Mr Len Wilson controlled the bout. „ At the gong, both men came to the referee’s hold and Alley threw h.s j opponent several times with head-, locks and Lurich endeavoured to get. a j figure-four scissors on Alley’s head, j but ..the latter responded with a bodyscissors and face .bar. The Russian succeeded in breaking this, only to be trapped in a punishing splits. On escaping from the splits, Lurich tried for his famous figure-four body scissors, his specialty hold. The crowd rose’ to its feet expecting trouble, but Alley was very wary and quickly sprang out of clanger.
Lurich tried hard for hir scissors all through the second round, but the •Morman would not give him a chance. iHe brought Lurich down several times' with head-locks, and at last the Russian got the body scissors on, but it was applied too low down, and Alley pulled 'himself out. The. Russian ' was struggling hard in a short-arm scissors at the gong. In the third round, Lurich did all the leading and threw Alley over the ropes.. ,He. brought his mail to the mat with a full Nelson, but Alley bucked out. of .it to secure a step-over toe-hold on the Russian and he Held this' at the end of the round.
Lurich brought Alley to the mat with a wristlock at the coinmencement of the .fourth round, but the Mormon applied, a ’splits., Lurich reached over and .got, Alley’s legs and the Mormon released his bold to be caught in a head-scissors. The Russian kept forcing the pace and; crowding Alley as much as he could. Alley - threw him repeatedly with fierce' head-locks, but Lurich was playing ‘•possum,’' * and suddenly he sprang to life and clamped on :his famous body-scissors amidst the wildest excitement. -He brought •Alley to the mat to gain the first fall of the match. ,
■Lurich rushed in ait 'the, bell for the fifth round . and tried again for the bodv-scissors, but the Mormon was not to be caught the second time, and carefully avoided the (Russian's p'nchn]'ike legs. ; .-Alley applied ,a . .punishing head-seissorS and arm-bar, but Lunch pulled himself out. Looking very groggy, Lurich backed slowly to his corner. Alley went in quickly, hut the Russian came out smartly to meet him, and the Mormon sprang back, -n a great hurry. Alley secured a splits, and then a continued body-scissors and double wrist-lock to Lurich. and then tried for his famous crucifix. He obtained it partially, and-.Lurich n- ;, l to crawl out under the ropes, but. Alley dragged him back to the centie. of the ring, where the Russian broke the hold. Alley immediately clamped it on again,, this time securely and rolled Lurich round and .round _ During. . The,. Russian bucked and kickedand fried to get. to his Let. in an endeavour to break it, but he was st-11 vainly struggling in the .criieifix at the gong. iV'/D . t. ■■ ”• ; -/-• iLurich, apparently, a 'very strong map came in . slowly tor the nest round and Alley threw him fiercely., with a series of • head-locks. Lurich crawled out under the ropes. How ever, he - had Alley almost seemed - i his, body-scissors when the gong went. ■Shortly after the, .start of the seventhround Lurich .got his chance and he again,, clamped ion his deadly figure-four body-, scissors. ,Things looked ugly i'or'\Alley, but, .displaying remarkable strength, he got to his. feet ,and . back-loop slammed ; the Russian ,to gain a fall. Lurich was unable to continue and Alley was therefore declared the, winner.,
PASHA. BEATS PINTO. . ' CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. . Kara Pasha 1 , ‘‘The Terrible Turk,” to-night defeated Stanley Pinto, “The Nebraska Wildcat,” in a heavyweight wrestling contest which went the eight scheduled rounds. Pinto secured a Mall in the fourth round and the Turk obtained a fall ' pin.';.the eighth round, the decision being awarded to Pasha on points.

to his room on the Greek's shoulders. In the fifth round, McDougail secured a .fall, following two flying tackles, which, tdok Deipetral by surprise. On the opening of the sixth round the Canadian tried to repeat his performance, buti-Uemetral this time stepped nimbly a*side, and McDougail.- went clean through the ropes, to land on the floor on his head and side. He was rendered temporarily unconscious, and was imabb to continue. • Demetral was declared the winner.
