In the House of Commons, Dr Drummond Shiels announced the setting up of a Commission to investigate the financial position in Mauritius ,n the light of the colony’s economic resources. It would consist of Sir Ivo Elliott, ,of the Indian Civil Service, as Chairman; and Air G.- Lnughnane, of the Home, Civil Service.
The Commissioner will advise as to measures to reduce the expenditure, to increase the local revenue, to balance the budget without loss of adinlliisti a,tive efficiency or risk of prejudicing future development, and as to measure? to reduce the burden on tbe general revenue of the Government railways.
It will report also on the fiducial and economic desirability of completin'" the irrigation schemes now in progress and of undertaking other development schemas.
