FARMERS’ OPPOSITION

WELLINGTON, July 9

Apropos of reductions in Customs duties, the Farmers’ Conference to-day carried remits to the effect that it is opposed to duties or restrictions for protective purposes being placed on the necessaries of life and productions; and that it considers that any temporary assistance necessary for local industries should be in the form of subsidies.

The necessity of New Zealand possessing a policy which would lead to the elimination of the cause of its unemployment was stressed to-day by a committee of the Farmers’ Union Conference, which made recommendations. The Committee considered that it is imperative that finance should be made Available immediately to assist farmers who otherwise, would have to vacate their farms, owing to the lack of funds. That, in the Committee’s opinion was the most pressing need in the country to-day. - The Committee considered that Mr Franklin’s scheme for the formation of fa rm camps should be amended, and given a trial; the. Government to secure suitable farms, also, provide \the material for erecting the hutments and provide the food for the occupants of the farm. The occupants would have to observe rules on the farm camps and to give honest work in return' for food, and pnymonts would be supplied. They could proceed to other employment when it was secured. They must behave in an orderly and proper fashion.
