TOWN CLERK’S STATEMENT.

The Town Clerk, Mr Layton, addressing members of the Millions Club denounced the present system of civic control ami the intrusion of' party politics into civic administration. He indicated that the civic commission cleared up many doubtful transactions that were not made public. It had been said that the City Council bad been a disgrace to the city for years. This was a dreadful thing to say but there was a certain amount of truth in it, r l he Commission had done excellent work and had wiped the- slate mean and placed the business of the city on a sound basis. There were more things to the discredit of the city than you can realise.

SIGNING THE AGREEMENT

SYDNEY, July 9

Mr Lang admitted in reply to a question that he had signed the conversion agreement. He explained that the necessary legislat’on had been introduced in the Assembly the following morning, jn consequence of a telegram received from the Victorian Premier, the introduction of the Bill is now to be delayed.

Mr. Settllin in the House of Representative? said the agreement had been signed by all States with the exception of Victoria.
