Thk Acclimatication and Tourist Society ha® moved opportunely in regard to. more attention to the tourist resorts of South Westland. Four works of special importance a.ftd interest were mentioned at the meeting oft Monday* night: These intjiidb the renewal of tlie Gallery Gorge foot bridge which is reported to be in a dangerous state, and is necessary folaccess to the Waiho Glacier along the north hank approach track; the completion of Alec’s Knob track which wall

afford a fine panoramic view of the surrounding country; a new track to Lake Mueller, which' has ?, distinctive beauty of its own in the Weheka district; and a vehicle road to the Waiho Glacier. The last mentioned would require to be constructed with care, and could be made a very beautiful if not unique, glade road. The need for this means of access has been referred to often, as the long walk for elderly folk often deters many from obtaining a close up view of the glacier. The claims of South Westland for more attention at the hands of the Tourist Department has been advanced very often, but the locality' does not appear to be one of the favoured districts with the Department. Year by year there is an outpouring of public money for the creation of artificial features at Rotorua and elsewhere, but here where nature is at her best in scenic attractions, the same consideration is lacking. This is an old complaint often reiterated, but so far without saisfactory effect, It ds well therefore that the claims of the district should not be overlooked, and those who are maintaining the agitation are deserving of appreciation for their action in the public interests. The four works particularised above, are all situated in the southern district. There are- other parts of Westland which might also he brought I under the notice of the • Department, hut if the Government can become in* teresded in the matters suggested it will suffice for the present. The works are all of a useful character, and provided, will add considerably to the special attractions: of the southern district.
