OBITUARY

W. J. JOYCE, SOLICITOR. Ihe death which occurred somewhat unexpectedly last night, of Air William Joseph Joyce, , Barrister and Solicitor of Greymouth, removes' from our midst one of the best and most wide-ly-known West Coasfers, and one whose kindly and jorial personality the community can 111 afford to lose. While his health had not been latterly of the best, the late Air Joyce had continued his professional duties right up to the time when illness obliged him to enter the Grey Hospital, and he had appeared as usual at the last Supreme Court sessions here about three peek's ago. Last week he underwent an operation, and another was deemed necessary last night, which was successfully completed, but the patient did not rally after it, and his death occurred aboutill o'clock. The late William Joyce must be ranked among the foremost figures whom the legal profession has known on the West Coast, in which he played a very important part for a period of nearly forty years. As a criminal lawyer. he was widely noted for his ability. In 1892 at the age of 21 he was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court and has continued to practice at Greymouth ever since. Genial and generous he was a popular personality, and the news of his death will be learnt with sincere regret by a host of friends throughout New Zealand. Born at Greymouth, in April, 1871, the late 'Air Joyce was the eldest sou of [Airs Honors Alary Joyce, of Alurray Street, and the late Thomas Joyce, well-known as a brewer in the early days of this district, and a leading figure in the public life of Greymouth. The deceased leaves a wife (a member of the Wallace family), and time sons, Gerald (Greymouth) William Joseph (North Island), and Percy (Greymouth), besides two sisters, Airs Alclnroe and Airs D.
