HIGHER SALARIES IN WELLINGTON
EXPENSES OF CITY COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, July 1. Tn. asking for a, return (if the expenses in the various departments ( of the City Council from 1920 to 1931, said Councillor M’Eldowney in a statement to-day, he had been largely influenced by figures obtained from Christchurch, iihich showed that apparently We'Jington’s payments in salaries in some departments were very much higher. The salaries paid in Wellington had risen from some £20.967 in 1926 to £32,278. The City Solicitor’s officealone absorbed £3280 per year in salaries. In Christchurch the City Solicitor was not a member of the staff. The average cost of that office to Christchurch during the past five years was £660. Wellington was paying the City Valuer £IOOO per year, and, with his assistant, that office cost £1426 per year. The highest paid valuer in the Government Valuation, Office- received £6OO a year, less the 10 per cent cut. yet it was upon this officer’s valuations that the city rates were based. Councillor M’Eldowney said he was not aware of the exact duties or purpose of the city’s Town Planner, who drew about £6OO per year.
