Viscount Allendale has resigned the Treasurership of the Liberal Party on account of a disagreement with Mr Lloyd George’s leadership. Lord Stanley Alderley has resigned the Presidency of Lancashire Cheshire Liberal Federation. ONE BIG UNION. AUSTRALIAN MARITIME PROJECT. 'SYDNEY, July 1. After three days of discussion, the Conference of the Trades Hall delegates has failed to arrive at a decision on the question of the formation of One Big Maritime Union. It has adjourned to a date to be fixed. STATUTE OF WESTMINISTER. OTTAWA, June 30. The adherence of Canada to the Statute of Westminister has been approved by Parliament. AN ENGLISH MURDER CASE. LONDON, July 1. A verdict of murder against Lewis, whose disappearance was cabled on May 30th, was returned by the Coroner. A doctor gave evidence that the woman in the case had been poisoned. The Coroner pointed out that Lewis boarded at Leith-bound steamer at Wapping the night before the bodies were found. Next day he was seen on deck. A splash was heard early in j the evening, but an hour’s search proved unavailing. His identity was established by the laundry marks on his clothes.
BRITISH SUGAR DUTY. GOVERNMENT REFUSAL TO REDUCE IT. RUGBY, July 1. In the House of Commons to-night, a new clause to the Finance Bill, for the extending of the existing preferential reductions in 'Customs duties in respect of sugar, molasses, glucose and saccharine, was moved by Mr Amery (Conservative). It was rejected by 284 votes to 226. Mr Amery, on behalf of the amendment, urged that there is a serious position in the sugar growing felonies of the Empire, and particularly in the West Indies and in 'Mauritius. •Mr Pethick Lawrence (Government) resisted the clauses, which, he said, would cost two millions in a full year.
