INTER-CLUB DEBATE
A KEEN CONTEST. WIN FOR ST. MARY’S. There was an excellent attendance at St. Mary’s Club Rooms last evening to hear the inter-Club debate, St, Mafey’s 'vejrsus St, Cblumba ■ (Greymouth) for the Stuart Cup, for which last evening’s contest was the first of the series of three. Throughout the debate there was a marked keenness shown, each speaker being well conversant with the matter; There was a very narrow margin between the teams as the figures will show and St. Mary’s are to be congratulated on their win. St. Mary’s Club, during the past season, has made splendid progress and their success last evening is no doubt due to the sustained interest in their Club work. Mr G. Wormington was the Chairman for the evening and extended a welcome to the visitors. He, introduced the various speakers and then the debate took place. The question for discussion was : “That the Introduction of Machinery is not Beneficial to Mankind.” The teams were :—St. Mary’s (aff) Messrs J. Stopforth (leader), J. Stuart, J. Hutchison, B. Kempton. St. Cblumba (neg) Messrs M. Kelly (leader), M, Eales I. Mdlroy, G Burning and the results were: St. Diary’s 526, St. Columba 521. Mr W. Jeffries acted as judge and carried cmt his duties in a very ably manner. He said that the speakers in both teams had done very well and it was hard to draw a comparison between them. However, after a careful summing up lie had decided in favour of St. Diary’s and wished to congratulate the winners on their success. They had made a marked improvement since he last heard them and was pleased to say that they had benefited by the useful criticisms he had given them on that occasion. Rev. Father McKay congratulated St. Mary’s on their victory. He was. pleased that the home team had won and wished St. Columba success in future' contests. k ltev. Father Holohan extended congratulations and returned thanks on. behalf of St. Columba Club for the cordial reception given. A fine musical programme followed, j The following contributed : —Misses Hawaiian, and Warren, Messrs Duffy, J Durning and Hatch. Dliss Aileen Daly J was an efficient accompanists. 1 An excellent supper was then served by the Ladies’ Club and a dance followed which judging by the happy spirit prevailing was most enjoyable. The function terminated after midnight with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
